Smoking Cessation


The University of Chicago Medicine's Courage To Quit program offers an individualized, comprehensive approach to help you overcome nicotine addiction and quit smoking within two to three sessions. Services include:

-Nicotine addiction assessment
-Counseling provided by a trained tobacco treatment specialist
-Behavioral and cognitive strategies to cope with cravings
-Information about prescription and over-the -counter medications to help increase your chance of quitting
-Carbon monoxide monitoring at every visit, to record differences in your carbon monoxide levels before and after you quit smoking

Graduates of the program may schedule booster groups or individual sessions upon request.

-For adults who wish to reduce or stop their use of tobacco and nicotine, including cigarettes, cigars, snuff, hookah, e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco.
- All participants must have health insurance.
-Accepted insurance plans include Medicaid, Medicare, UCHP, U-SHIP, and most private PPO insurance plans. Contact your insurance provider or call 773-702-3858 to find out if your insurance is accepted.
-Services may be covered by HMO plans if there are no in network providers. If you have an HMO, please have your primary care provider fax a referral/order for tobacco cessation treatment to the UChicago Medicine Department of Psychiatry Intake Department at 773-834-6761. Intake staff will contact you to schedule.

How to Apply

Call the Psychiatry Department intake department at 773-702-3858 to register. Your insurance benefits will be verified prior to enrollment. Sessions are offered in a rolling group format. You may join at any time.
