Counseling • Community Awareness • Trauma • Violence Prevention
The Safe from the Start program provides counseling for families with children ages 0-5 who have been exposed to violence, and presentations on themes related to keeping kids safe and children’s exposure to violence for parents, community members, and professionals. The primary goal of the Safe from the Start program is to prevent and reduce the trauma of exposure to violence in young children from birth to age five, and their families. The program also seeks to increase community awareness about early childhood exposure to violence, including early warning signs of exposure, ways to help children exposed to violence, and ways to prevent such exposure in the first place.
- Participants must have at least one child age 5 or younger (be aware that the program works with the entire family, including older siblings of that child).
- Participants must have children who have experienced neglect, child abuse, community violence, domestic violence, or sexual abuse.
- The program is able to offer limited transportation assistance (CTA passes for participants in the groups) at this time.
- If a family participating in Safe from the Start services lives within 3 miles of Casa Central, and their home is assessed to be a safe and appropriate environment for the provision of therapy, the program is occasionally able to provide home-based therapy services on a limited basis.
