Harbor Light's Intensive Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) provides residential treatment for up to 20 men with a substance use disorder or dual diagnosis. Stays range from 21 to 45 days, with an average stay of 28 days. The length of stay is determined by client need, regardless of insurance approval or lack thereof. Services include individual and group counseling, as well as spiritual support. Psychiatry and primary care services are available two days per week. Clients are placed in jobs at Salvation Army sites.
-Clients must pass a drug and alcohol screening prior to admission. Detox services are available for homeless clients if needed.
-Staff will attempt to bill insurance when available, but there is no cost to clients regardless of whether or not they have insurance.
-The use of cell phones, nicotine, methadone, buprenorphine (Suboxone), benzodiazepines, psychostimulants (e.g., Adderall), first generation antipsychotics (e.g., Haldol), narcotics, and alcohol is prohibited.
-Due to the presence of children, registered sex offenders and those subject to electronic monitoring cannot be accommodated.
-Although the IRU has Spanish speaking staff, services are generally available in English only. Clients should have basic English proficiency, but staff can provide occasional translation assistance if needed.

How to Apply
Walk ins are accepted for intake when staff availability allows, but calling ahead is strongly preferred. Call 312-667-2263 or 312-667-2244 to schedule an intake appointment. Intake is available weekdays from 7:30am until 11:30am. It is suggested that you call early in the day to schedule for best appointment times and soonest availability. Please bring the following:
-Social Security Card
-Insurance card, if available
-Discharge paperwork, if coming from a hospital or detox program
-30 day supply of any medication you have been prescribed
-5 changes of clothing
-Bath towel, if available
You will be assessed for eligibility and then admitted to the intake unit until an IRU bed is available. A psychiatric assessment may be required prior to admission. The wait for a bed ranges from 1 week to 1 month, but clients can generally be admitted within 2 weeks. The intake unit is a safe, supportive environment offering three meals a day, on site 12 step meetings, peer support, and social activities.
