Child Abuse Reporting • Mandated Reporter • Hotline • Child Neglect • Child Protective Services
Description
DCFS has the primary responsibility of protecting children through the investigation of suspected abuse or neglect by parents and other caregivers in a position of trust or authority over the child. The public can help DCFS protect children by reporting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a child.
Child abuse occurs when a parent, caregiver, or anyone in a position of power and authority (e.g., teacher, coach, religious leader, health care provider) harms a child or puts a child at risk of harm through mistreatment. Child abuse can be physical (e.g., bruises, broken bones), sexual (e.g., fondling or incest), or mental (emotional injury or psychological illness). Neglect occurs when a parent or caregiver fails to provide a child with appropriate food, clothing, shelter, and other basic needs. Exploitation occurs when a parent or other person in a position of authority over a child uses the child for personal gain (money, power, sexual gratification).
