Lurie Children's Heartlight program offers support groups for families facing the loss of a child. A Parents Group and a Sibling Group meet concurrently at an offsite location. Following dinner and conversation, parents and children retreat to separate areas. Parents participate in a discussion facilitated by licensed social workers, while the children gather in age-specific groups to participate in activities led by Heartlight staff and volunteers to help explore and express their feelings of grief. A support group for Spanish speaking families (Luz del Corazon) is also available.
-The program is free and open to the public. You do not have to be a Lurie Children's patient to receive services.
-Support groups are available to parents who have lost a child, and siblings ages 3-18. Heartlight provides informational resources only to grandparents who have lost a grandchild.
-Support groups can sometimes accommodate those who have experienced loss of a pregnancy. Please call to inquire. Staff will register you for a support group or refer you to alternate resources as appropriate. -Support groups are not available for parents who have lost an adult child.
-Heartlight offers support groups only. Group therapy and individual grief therapy are not available.
-Services are available in Spanish at the Humboldt Park location.
